DME and Accessibility: The Essence for Maintaining Autonomy and Independence of People with a Spinal Cord Injury
A collaborative one-day workshop organized by three ASIA Committees (Americas, Rehabilitation Standards and Education) to enhance the knowledge of spinal cord injury care for any provider involved in the care of this patient population in the United States and abroad. The target audience for this workshop includes both community providers (including but not limited to Physicians, PTs, OTs, and SLPs who care for individuals with SCI both locally and around the world.)

2024 Annual Scientific Meeting Highlights
G. Heiner Sell Lecturer
The 2024 Distinguished G. Heiner Sell Lectureship of ASIA will be presented by Armin Curt, MD, FRCPC. Dr. Curt is Chief and Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Centre at Balgrist University
Hospital. Armin Curt’s research interests are translational research in human SCI, neuro-rehabilitation, clinical neurophysiology and neuro-imaging in human SCI. The Sell Lecture “Inclusive Trial Design: The Value of Real-World Data” will be presented by Dr. Curt on the first day of the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 22-23.

2024 ASIA Lifetime Achievement Award
For the first time, the same individual is being awarded the G. Heiner Sell Lectureship and the ASIA Lifetime Achievement Award. Armin Curt, MD, FRCPC is founder and chair of the largest European SCI Clinical network (www.emsci.org) established in 2004 and involved in early translational clinical trials. The network focuses on clinical recovery profiles and is establishing prediction models to inform the setup of interventional clinical trials and provide outcome thresholds of clinically meaningful neurological and functional assessments. Join us in San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 20-23, 2024, where we will honor Dr. Curt for his significant contributions to the world of spinal cord injury care.

2024 Keynote Talk – State of Spinal Cord Injury Care in Puerto Rico
Wednesday, May 22, 9:30 am – 10:30 am
This keynote session will provide a look at the state of care for spinal cord injury (SCI) patients in Puerto Rico. It will include data on traumatic SCI including incidence, etiology, age distribution and common level of injury for the only Trauma Center in the island. This session will highlight the regional differences for SCI demographics and care in Puerto Rico.
Dr. Manuel F. Mas is an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Puerto Rico. His research is focused on prognosis and improvement to care in patients suffering from trauma, as well as the management of spasticity in other patient populations. Dr. Mas has been a PI or co-investigator on several research projects and collaborated in larger multicenter studies, focusing on this patient population. | |
Dr. Eduardo Nadal-Ortiz has more than 19 years of experience in the field of medicine. Dr. Nadal-Ortiz is a SCI PMR Specialist who serves as Chief of Service Spinal Cord Injuries/Disorders for the VA Caribbean Healthcare System and is SCI Rehab Director for the VA Caribbean Healthcare System. |
