
John A Horton, III, MD. was a Cum Laude with Honors graduate of Duke University, completing his Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. He Served as a US Naval officer, qualifying in Submarines as well as competing his Engineering Officers Qualifications prior to attending Medical School at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He Graduated with Thesis Honors in 1993. His training continued as a General Surgery intern at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and subsequently as a Resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed his residency training in 1997 and continued at this institution for his subspecialty training in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine. He was Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. In 1998 he became the first Board Certified Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Physician to have followed the accredited fellowship pathway. Following his fellowship training, he became the First Director of the specialty Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Program for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He established the ACGME certified Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Pittsburgh in 2001. He remains active in the in and outpatient setting at the University of Pittsburgh.
He is actively involved in the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals and American Spinal Injury Association. He has served in numerous capacities, being the ASIA Membership committee chair and Bylaws committee member during the transition to include non-MD doctoral memberships as well as a current member of the Awards Committee. He has presented on numerous occasions and continues to foster interest by introduction and incorporation of his Fellows and Residents who have also contributed substantially to the Spinal Cord Injury community in numerous ways.
