ASIA Statement on Racism and Our Commitment to Equity

June 8, 2020

Dear ASIA Members,

Every quarter the ASIA leadership team writes you a message. In doing so, we enjoy the chance to reflect and be thoughtful and genuine. Without reflection and recognition, there is rarely learning. However, at the time of this message we find ourselves ‘speechless’. The world around us feels overwhelmed with fear, anger, and anxiety. Over the past few months, we have witnessed the human fragility brought on by the COVID-19 virus and over the last few weeks, we are witnessing the fragility of society by a cultural virus called racism.

The racially-motivated violent events involving George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and others demonstrates the persistence of racism, injustice and violence that infect our society. Racism is a cultural virus based on ignorance and disrespect. Racism blinds us to the human dignity that lives in every human being. It is the antithesis of being enlightened and kind. And just like other viruses, it can spread if not isolated, disarmed, and ultimately destroyed.

So, we write this as we are at an intersection of these two crises. Despite all the great things that are being done by our members and others to combat COVID-19, the United States (and other nations) are failing to combat the spread of the cultural virus and its ramifications. To that end, we send a simple message from the heart. Racism is a cultural virus of attitude and the antidote must come from within. We must break the cycle of hate with injections of kindness and we all have that within us to give. We need to fight the fear and anger with calm and kindness. By leading with moral kindness and respect, we collectively have the power to make real change; change that will overcome the virus of racism, the biological virus of COVID-19, and a reminder that every life is precious and deserving of respect.

Stay strong. Stay Safe. Be well and lead with kindness, caring, and respect.
