Encouraging Sexual Sustainability After SCI: A Comprehensive Approach |
1 CME Available
|
ABOUT THE WEBINARMaintaining a health sex life is an important priority for people with SCI. As a clinician, it is important to know how SCI affects sexual function; however, this is only a piece of the puzzle. In order to maximize sexuality after SCI, it is important to take a comprehensive approach, looking at all aspects of the individual and how various issues can affect their sexuality. In this lecture, Dr. Marcalee Alexander, a well-known expert in the field of sexuality and SCI will discuss the most important aspects of the ISNSCI to assess when considering the impact of injury on sexual response and why the sexual potential of people with SCI is likely higher than has been documented through research. She will discuss a strategy to ensure sexual sustainability after SCI, considering factors not only related to the SCI but also regarding the individual’s childhood, concomitant health and medication issues, psychological, cultural, and dyadic concerns. Finally, basic treatment options and opportunities for further learning will be reviewed. |
ABOUT THE PRESENTERMarcalee Sipski Alexander, MD has been a physiatrist with special expertise in SCI since 1986. She served as the first female president of ASIA from 2005-2007. Her research has focused on sexual response after SCI and she has conducted multiple laboratory-based studies in women and men with SCI, documenting the impact of specific levels and degrees of SCI on sexual response. Moreover, her research served as a personal impetus for the development of the International Standards for the Assessment of Autonomic Function after SCI which she spearheaded. Recently after realizing the importance of translating her work direct to consumers, she wrote the eBook: Sexual Sustainability: A guide to having-a great sex life with a spinal cord disorder which has recently been translated into Spanish. Furthermore, in April 2020, in conjunction with volunteers in rehabilitation from 5 different continents, she founded a YouTube channel, Sustain Our Abilities designed to bring home educational materials to people with disabilities around the world. Via this mechanism, she has just launched a weekly series, For Today, that discusses various aspects of sexuality and quality of life after disability. Dr. Alexander is passionate about climate change and SCI and the use of telerehabilitation as a green form of health care for people with disabilities. She developed the nonprofit Telerehabilitation International in 2019 and is midway through a walk from Canada to Key West to highlight the issues of disasters for persons with disabilities. She is the Editor-In-Chief of Spinal Cord Series and Cases, is Professor of Clinical Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, has a sexuality telehealth clinic at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and is developing a private practice in Telerehabilitation. |
