The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation and Spinal Research have partnered to fund pre-clinical research applications on paralysis caused by traumatic spinal cord injury. A critical step in the translational pipeline is that between discovery/initial proof of concept and Investigational New Drug (or Investigational Device) enabling studies, and there is a dearth of funding for such studies. Therefore, we are sponsoring a request for applications (RFA) to address this gap.
The RFA encompasses early pre-clinical to translational research to support pre-IND or pre-IDE studies in traumatic SCI.
Our goal is to promote an understanding of a proposed therapeutic that will encourage continued engagement and support to prepare for the next stages of scientific research and development. Studies of new or repurposed drugs and biologics, and non-clinical research for medical devices, gene therapy approaches, of neuroprotection, regeneration and plasticity are within the scope of the RFA. Full drug screens, IND enabling studies or clinical research are outside the scope of this RFA.

Peter Farrell SpinalCure Fellowship
This prestigious award provides AUD$1.5million over five years to support an outstanding early/mid-career researcher undertaking innovative research which takes steps towards the goal of a cure for spinal cord injury.
Eligible applications will investigate novel ways to restore and/or protect communication between brain and body after a spinal cord injury, or to enhance our understanding of the spinal cord, thereby advancing the field of cure-related research. Basic science and pre-clinical projects are particularly encouraged.
The Fellowship has been made possible by the generosity of Caroline Farrell, in memory of her late husband, a successful computer scientist who lived with a spinal cord injury for 17 years after a car accident left him with tetraplegia.
Eligible candidates will be 3–10 years post award of their PhD and be in a position to work in Australia for the term of the Fellowship.

Research Grants: NASS is currently accepting grant letters of proposal until February 5, 2024.
NASS offers grant funding for promising research projects by both experienced and Young Investigators, within the categories of Basic, Clinical or Translational research. NASS also awards a Nontraditional, Nonsurgical Treatment Grant, as the result of a donation to research that is part of a settlement of a class action lawsuit unrelated to NASS. This grant supports research of disc-related and/or neuropathic back pain by nonsurgical techniques. Funding amount and number of grants awarded annually are at the discretion of the NASS Research Funding Committee based upon merit of applications and amount of funding available each year. It is recommended that approved grant budgets range between $20,000-$40,000 per year. In rare cases and at the discretion of the committee, each year may be up to $50,000 per year.
