ASIA is committed to the well being of people with spinal cord injury/disease and to educate members, other healthcare professionals, patients and their families. The spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in North America and around the world is unprecedented. Individuals with spinal cord injury may represent the archetypal patient population of concern during the COVID-19 pandemic as many are afflicted with high rates of chronic medical comorbidities (e.g. respiratory dysfunction, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes), have systemic immune suppression and may also be at risk of disruption to social supports like caregiver supports and services. Presently, we have only limited understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on the SCI community. As the COVID-19 pandemic is changing daily, we encourage you to review local public health information on a regular basis to ensure you are well informed about your local and international situation related to prevention, assessment and treatment of COVID-19 and the care of affected individuals.
ASIA also recognizes the COVID-19 pandemic’s profound impact on all aspects of society, including mental health and physical health not only of our patients but also on our members as medical professionals who are continuing to provide state-of-the-art care of individuals with spinal cord injury during this challenging time.
