The American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) invites Researchers, Clinicians, and other SCI Professionals to submit Abstracts for Oral/Poster Presentations, Case Reports and Courses to be presented at the 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting, May 4-7, 2020.

NEW! Revised 2019 ISNCSCI Booklet and Exam Worksheet
The International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) published by ASIA and continuously maintained by the International Standards Committee of ASIA and the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) represents the gold standard assessment for documentation of the level and severity of a spinal cord injury (SCI). NIH Request for Information: Research Plan on Rehabilitation
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research is inviting comments and suggestions to guide the revision of the Research Plan on Rehabilitation on behalf of the Trans NIH Medical Rehabilitation Coordinating Committee.
In 2016, the National Institutes of Health published the Research Plan on Rehabilitation which outlined the priorities of the Institutes and Centers to advance rehabilitation science. Since that time, the NIH promoted multiple initiatives, workshops, and funding opportunities aimed at advancing the priorities within the research plan. Moreover, the National Center for

New SCI Medicine Fellowship at SUNY Upstate Medical University
The Syracuse VA Medical center and SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY are pleased to announce the approval of a new one-year, ACGME accredited SCI/D fellowship. The fellowship lasts one year following residency and is a collaborative effort between the VA and the academic medical center. Two fellows per year may be accepted, and the fellow swill be offered the full scope of SCI training.
Fellows will take part in a program structured to place the emphasis on education, and maintain an excellent quality of life over the course of the fellowship, while being exposed to all aspects of SCI care. The fellowship entails working in a role designed to emulate the role of a junior attending supervising a junior and senior resident at the 30-bed SCI/D service at the VA – a unit that cares for acute SCI, neurologic conditions such as ALS and Guillaine-Barre syndrome, inpatient and outpatient ventilator management...

Check It Out!
Asterias Goes Hollywood
If you are a fan of the television show Grey’s Anatomy, you may have spotted someone familiar in a recent episode. ASIA member Ed Wirth and Asterias Biotherapeutics were featured in the April 18 medical drama on ABC television. The AST syringe positioning device (SPD) was featured in the episode. Doctors on the show used the device to treat a cervical SCI patient and injected stem cells into the cord. If you caught the episode, you may have also been familiar with a male nurse in the SCI scenes. Dr. Wirth provided consulting on the SPD and set up. If you missed the episode, you can catch it online on ABC.
Dr. Wirth describes the filming of Grey’s Anatomy as an interesting and enjoyable experience. He says it was amazing to see how efficient they are with filming and how many different shots they take for each scene. The scene with Dr. Wirth is at the 30:11 mark. Just Released: Proceedings from Inaugural Medical Summit on Firearm Injury Prevention
Article published online by Journal of American College of Surgeons reflects the consensus of 41 professional legal and medical organizations on a constructive approach that can be taken to reduce injury, disability and death from firearm violence in the United States.
CHICAGO (May 21, 2019): Proceedings from the first-ever Medical Summit on Firearm Injury and Prevention have been released and published online on the Journal of the American College of Surgeons website as an article in press in advance of print publication.

Congratulations to the 2019 Fellows of the American Spinal Injury Association. The 2019 FASIA award recipients were announced and honored during the SCI Summit in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Fellowship in the American Spinal Injury Association (FASIA) is bestowed by the Board of Directors in recognition of distinguished accomplishments within the fields of spinal cord injury research, clinical practice, education and advocacy, and for a longstanding active membership of service to the society.
The designation of FASIA recognizes prominent contributions to, and support of, ASIA’s policies, practices, operations, and goals, which together advance its organizational mission. The designation also carries with it an unofficial obligation of maintaining an example of accomplishment for others in ASIA and providing continued leadership in the field.

Arkansas State University Research Study Seeking Survey Participants
Arkansas State University invites occupational, physical and speech therapists to participate in a doctoral research study: The need for the development of a specialized rehabilitation model for adolescents with spinal cord injury (SCI). The study aims to identify the need for a specialized rehabilitation model for adolescents with spinal cord injury. Participation requires the completion of a 32-question survey that takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, but time may vary depending on the amount of information provided. The objectives of this study are to examine the perspectives and current treatment practices

Canada to Key West
Raising Awareness about the impact of Extreme Weather on People with Disabilities
Canada to Key West is a movement started by professionals in academic medicine, whose goal is to raise awareness about extreme weather, and how it affects persons with physical and cognitive disabilities.
Canada to Key West is a 2,350-mile walk that will begin June 21, 2019. During the route, walkers will visit rehabilitation hospitals in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Richmond and Charleston to engage with academic partners about more effective mechanisms and planning to help people with disabilities during extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, polar vortices and heat waves.
