Thank you to all who made the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting a huge success. ASIA’s achievements are a product of its wonderful volunteer work force, be they on the Board, in our committees, or as presenting members, along with the great efforts of our Executive Director, Patty Duncan, and that of our management company, Ruggles Service Corporation, especially Carolyn Moffatt, who really works hand in glove with Patty. I cannot thank enough the Program Committee leaders, Argy Stampas, Meegan Van Straaten and Heather Russell, as well as the Program Committee and Research and Awards Committee members, who devoted many hours reviewing abstracts, deciding on awards, and putting pieces of the program together. A big thank you to Mayo Clinic and our colleagues who work there. Their participation in the Mayo Precourse and in our Scientific Meeting was invaluable. ASIA conference attendees really enjoyed the well-planned tours of Mayo and Rochester. Finally, I thank our Partners, Exhibitors and everyone who attended the conference.
Feedback from the 2018 conference was enthusiastic and very positive. ASIA leaders have reviewed evaluation comments and suggestions as plans are in full swing for the SCI Summit in Hawaii in 2019. At that meeting, April 2-5, we will emphasize the current state of the science, spanning topics from preclinical research to human studies to clinical practice, incorporating more about underutilized technologies from imaging to electrophysiology and include time for an expanded neuromodulation session. Imagine an ASIA meeting where a stem cell biologist and a neurosurgeon could get together, or where a physical therapist and a biomedical engineer could compare notes on therapeutic robotics, or where an animal physiologist and a human physiologist could exchange ideas about pre-clinical models, or, finally, where a neuro-critical care nurse and a rehab nurse could work to enhance quality of care in the transition of SCI patients from acute care to the rehab setting.
There will truly be something for all members of ASIA as well as the non-members we hope to attract. We look forward to seeing you all in Hawaii!
